Stead Street Affordable Housing is a gateway residential project at a key junction serving one of the main new neighbourhoods in the Elephant & Castle regeneration area, with the building rising above surrounding developments to establish a strong, recognisable presence in London.
The scheme provides 29 flats above re-provided ground-floor shop units, which remain pivotal as local meeting places and are enhanced with multi-directional access and a continuous, undulating roof canopy.
The dwellings are arranged as three stacked volumes: a base of three 1- and 2-bedroom flats per floor over five levels, a middle block of three 1-bedroom flats over two levels, and a top block of 2-bedroom flats over four levels.
A shared open-air terrace on the 8th floor, partly sheltered and partly open to the sky, offers residents a communal living room for relaxation, gatherings and enjoying panoramic views across London, with soft-wood soffits to the terrace and shop canopy and vividly coloured glazed brick cladding giving the building a warm, distinctive character.
