Client: Chong Bang Group

Hong Kong and Shanghai based property developer Chong Bang Group commissioned Metaphorm to propose an urban design for a key site along Huaihai Road near Mouming Road, one of the primary shopping avenues in the centre of Shanghai. The brief suggested mixed-use development consisting of retail, leisure and commercial uses on the 2.5ha site.
Our proposal aims to enhance footfall deep into the urban block by taking advantage of established and potential pedestrian shortcuts and informal through-routes, in order to maximise zone ‘A’ shop frontage and to establish viable cafes and restaurants. A key existing building on the site is the Shanghai Film Board, accommodating a central institution of China's fledgling film industry. The proposal builds on its presence, by extending its scope with a film and cinema related retail and office cluster. New serviced apartments, accommodated in the adjoining renovated Art Deco buildings will form part of a joint venture with the nearby Jin-Jiang Hotel. The historical Film Board building is proposed to be transformed into a film museum.
Complementing the urban design proposals, the client commissioned Metaphorm to design a major retail complex on the adjacent Ruijin Road site as an anchor destination.
